"Love" by Swami Vivekananda

I am reproducing here an article on Love by Swami Vivekananda.

I once had a friend who grew to be very close to me. Once when we were sitting at the edge of a swimming pool, she filled the palm of her hand with some water and held it before me, and said this: "You see this water carefully contained on my hand? It symbolizes Love."

This was how I saw it: As long as you keep your hand caringly open and allow it to remain there, it will always be there. However, if you attempt to close your fingers round it and try to possess it, it will spill through the first cracks it finds. This is the greatest mistake that people do when they meet love...they try to possess it, they demand, they expect... and just like the latter spilling out of your hand, love will retrace from you .

For love is meant to be free, you cannot change its nature. If there are people you love, allow them to be free beings.

1. Give and don't expect.

2. Advise, but don't order.

3. Ask, but never demand.

It might sound simple, but it is a lesson that may take a lifetime to truly practice. It is the secret to true love. To truly practice it, you must sincerely feel no expectations from those who you love, and yet an unconditional caring."

Passing thought... Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take; but by the moments that take our breath away....

it's really sound simple but to implement is the real hard deal, you may follow it for some time but to follow it for life time is really a crucial task. whenever you love someone you expect alot from him/her and overall problem persists due to the expectations.

it would be better if we try to minimize our expectations and feel free, but exactly how to do this is a big question.

I equally agree with what Swami told and what Abhinav... I myself is finding lost in this. Its hard that not all can or not all expect to see us a Swami Vivekananda! I'm just a normal human who is not broad minded :(
Thanks Sunil.

while I see this challenge, we do not want to give up our attachments and excuse ourselves that it is possible only for some people like Swami Vivekananda. This is an unfortunate situation of us who don't want to put the effort and excuse ourselves from achieving a greatness. isn't it?

i fully agree with swami ji's views about love. love is limitless , love is free,if we try to posses it,it will go out of our life.i believe only pure version of GOD is love which is independent of religon, caste, colour. by SUNNY BHAT

Love s always meant to be free... if u hold it tight its a compulsion, not true love. Love is just giving, not taking. If we truly love a person, this feeling will develop automatically..
